Hugh Maxton Biography
HUGH MAXTON – the biography can be safely read off from Mc Cormack’s, with caution. He was born outside Aughrim, County Wicklow. Early poems appeared in The Dublin Magazine, Hayden Murphy’s Broadsheet, etc. In 1969, with Seamus Deane and Derek Mahon, he was co-founder of Atlantis, an adventurous magazine that lasted six issues before the oil crisis forced the cost of paper out of reach. A slim collection, Stones, appeared under the Allen Figgis imprint in 1970. Six years later, The Noise of the Fields (Dolmen Press) was the Poetry Society’s spring choice.
